COMMUNITY MESSAGE FROM WARWICK VALLEY CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

Dear Warwick Valley School Community,

We would like to clarify the context surrounding a classroom image that was recently posted online by a parent and has since been widely shared. The image, which depicts a map related to the Arab-Israeli conflict, has prompted concern.

Our review shows that the photo was taken by a student at the end of a separate class period, while the teacher was preparing materials for a later course. The student was not enrolled in that class and did not receive the accompanying instruction, context, or related materials. As a result, the image was shared without its intended instructional framing, which understandably may lead to confusion or misinterpretation when viewed in isolation.

The map in question was one of several instructional resources used in a Global History II lesson aligned with New York State standards.

Specifically, the lesson falls under Theme 10: Nationalism in the NYSED Global History and Geography II Framework.

Standard 10.7c directs students to “investigate Zionism, the mandates created at the end of World War I, and Arab nationalism,” and to “examine the creation of the State of Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict.”

The lesson was designed to help students analyze bias, explore multiple historical perspectives, and develop critical thinking skills. Several additional maps and instructional materials were presented during the class discussion to provide a fuller and more balanced view—though these were not reflected in the image shared online. Based on our preliminary review, the teacher’s actions were consistent with district policy and professional standards of conduct.

While we respect the right of individuals to express concerns online, social media does not always provide the full context needed to understand complex instructional topics. In this case, some of the commentary has mischaracterized the lesson’s intent and content.

We remain committed to fostering open, respectful communication with all members of our school community and welcome future conversations that support mutual understanding and collaboration.

Sincerely,
David Leach
Superintendent of Schools
