District seeks feedback on cell phone policy
Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
As you may be aware, Governor Kathy Hochul recently signed the New York State Distraction-Free Schools Law. This legislation requires school districts across New York to implement a ban on student access to internet-enabled communication devices, including smartphones, tablets and smartwatches, during the school day.
In response, Warwick Valley Central School District is in the process of drafting a new policy that aligns with this law and supports our shared commitment to creating safe, focused and engaging learning environments. We will post a draft of the policy in late July.
To guide your input, you may wish to consider the following questions. Please note that all suggestions should align with the requirements of the new state law.
- What is the most practical and secure way for schools to store or restrict access to personal devices during the school day?
- What support can we offer students and families as they adjust to this change?
- How should parents be able to contact their children during the school day?
- What consequences or interventions do you believe are appropriate if a student repeatedly violates the policy?
As we begin this initiative, your feedback is essential. We invite you to share your questions, suggestions, or any concerns you may have. Your insights will help us develop a thoughtful policy that addresses the needs of our students and school community.
Email your feedback to: distractionfreeschools@wvcsd.org. The deadline for submissions is Friday, July 25.
