Students take teacher win as learning opportunity in annual kickball face-off

A forecasted lightning storm wasn’t about to dampen spirits at Warwick Valley Middle School last Thursday, but the atmosphere certainly remained electric as the highly anticipated 6th Annual Staff vs. 8th Grade Kickball Game moved indoors to the gymnasium!

Excitement mounted as everyone made their way to the gym for the kick-off of this popular end-of-year tradition. The student/staff game is the already-legendary culmination of a spirited month-long kickball tournament at the middle school. During the tourney, 8th-grade teams compete for the grade-level title. However, as any 8th-grade kickballer will tell you, it isn’t the title that matters; it’s the chance to make a run at the always-powerful teacher team!

In its first two years, the staff/student game was won handily by the teachers. Personifying resilience, the students rethought their strategies and posted wins in each of the next two years. But it was the teachers’ turn again last year, winning the game to bring the series record to 3-2 in their favor.

The teachers’ kickball lesson plans proved unbeatable again this year. They took an early lead and never looked back, ultimately shutting out the student team with a decisive 13-0 victory. The excitement of the teachers’ well-struck kicks and their dazzlingly stingy defense, not only kept the 8th graders off the scoreboard but also kept the cheering crowd on its feet.

Receiving his fair share of the cheers for his contributions to the win was middle school teacher Brett Algera, whose standout performance earned him the game’s MVP Award! And as the staff proudly hoisted the coveted kickball trophy to enthusiastic applause, there was already a buzz going around about “getting them next year” when rematch time comes around.
